Poem

      PERSEVERE

      smells of chalk
      sour milk
      and farts in the corridor

      a charleyhorse
      knotting one leg
      just below the hip

      a chinese burn
      twisted into the wrist
      hot and scarlet

      migs cockfights
      and kingy
      and the girls'

      unhistorical skipping chants
      mysterious
      as their ways

      oliver cromwell lost his shoe
      at the battle of waterloo

      to be who I am
      I remember
      exactly who I was
