Three Poems

THE ONSET

in the stillness of an April day
you can smell autumn in the air
all the scenes that I see
confirm winter's mantel will soon take grip
time for what
no time at all
my hour glass is filling
you see the onset of autumn
brings these things to mind

and thoughtful purpose
can take a backseat to fantasy
in the long lush grasses
where amber rules supreme
until the wind dragons roar
scattering their jewels
there and there, and look
even over there,
I imagine the rush
of passion at the precise moment
when I fly free
just like all the rest
still one of a kind
now the dragons whisper
and the falcon plays
on the thermals
liquid motion glides above
these wistful thoughts
of an Autumn afternoon.

AROHANUI KAIKOHE

The sweet sound of her name
my heart skips a beat
she embraces me with a love
not known before
for in her mists
there is a man
Arohonui Kaikohe
Te tahe

She holds him high
where he belongs
children his life
his passion
a master of
in her heart lies ours
my Dad and we
Arohonui Kaikohe
Kia Kiaha

She nurtures her bans
never to far
kai moana at her sides
food for all
something for the pot
something for the heart
ko koe a ngahe
te tahe te only
kai kiaha kahurangi's
Arohonui Kaikohe.

FELICITY-JANE

She wears a white dress,
leans back agains the fence post
something else steals the gaze of her dark soft eyes,
the smile that I wish to see,
I could not tell you the colour
of her cascading hair,
for the way the sun made it gleam
it appeared to obtain a colour of its own.

She has bear feet,
and tells me of walking in the meadowsong
and the dance of the sunset auras,
then starts out across the fields of wildflowers,
the wind melts the fabric to her form,
stand there knowing I can't follow
through her fields of dreams.

She walks alone,
and so do I,
it will always be this way,
for the beast that stole her innocence
still hunts her everyday.
