Two Poems

      The Eagle Weeps

      We awoke to a nightmare
      Lady Liberty packed her bags.
      And Lincoln wept granite tears.
      For all that was lost.

      Washington cannot sleep.
      He paces with despair,
as shadows fall upon our land.

      Environmentalists scream,
      a warning heard too late.
      Self centered we barter all,
      once held dear.
      Forget the lessons taught.

      Uncle Sam now hides,
from the stones thrown his way.
The Bear, the Bull, and the Dragon
      wait but to seek revenge,
upon an enemy no longer feared.

      For words are just that.
      Promises are not kept.

      No wonder the world,
      is raising an alarm.
      But who will listen?

      For Justice is indeed blind.
She is going deaf as well.
      How else could one,
      explain the silence,
      that follows her children's lament.

      Yes, a kangaroo court
      sits in judgment,
      and plays at making kings.

      Look even the eagle
      weeps as it surveys
      our land

      Innocence Lost

      Beneath a smoke filled sky
      Liberty weeps over,
      innocent blood spilled.
Twins, the pride of a nation gone.

      Terror has hit home.
      We've awakened, to a nightmare.
      Yes, the sun rises anew.
But it shines on a changed world.
Freedom no longer taken for granted.

      Fire, smoke, ash, debris.
Grim reminders of what was lost.
      Innocence, security, and more.
      Much more.

Our eyes, those windows to our souls
Weep with sorrow over all that is gone.
All that was and will never be.
Yesterday is a memory, we cannot shake.
For even an ocean of tears cannot relieve
      the heartache, we are changed.
      The sun seems less bright.
The birds song no longer as sweet.
      Someday in the future,
the sun shine will shine again
      and we'll know peace.
But always, it will be peace shadowed
by the knowledge of what happened.
      Of what was.
      Innocence lost.
