MARTHA MORSETH /

Three Poems

      Home, the denouement

Cobweb --- threads taut, glistening in moonspot,
      fugue-ready for acclaimed performance,
      waiting to net supporting cast

Eucalyptus --- branches anticipating winds's cues,
      response twisted into conflict,
      rising action, pitching towards catastrophe

Possum --- sound effects of growing tension
      wood splintering, roof disembowelling, reaching
      tragic tones in climatic trap

Occupant --- passive in ambiguous darkness
      resistant to emotive engagement, assuming
      psychic distance, applauding in relief

      Monsters

Of course there were monsters in the closet
African lions, reptiles with stinging tongues,
shadows with scimitar claws, sulphur breath,
all waiting for movement, the smell of child.

Under the bed crocodiles crouched, their
      cavernous mouths of daggers craving
a succulent thumb, a plump hand carelessly
flung in trusting sleep, slipping downward.

Sometime in growing, the monsters altered,
      melted into misunderstandings, re-formed
into wraiths of regrets, settled silently
unnoticed behind the clothes, still hungry.
