Poem

      L'ecuyere

      (Chagall)

      A recumbent Venus lies nude
and relaxed on her white horse
      as if on a bearskin

      A hand covering her lap
      holds a bunch of flowers
      while the arm on which

      she rests her head
holds a golden fan to indicate
the ease with which she balances

      Above the naked body
arches a sky of lapis lazuli
      in which appears two moons:
      one pale, one golden.
